Chicago Farmers Markets (2006)

Hi, and thanks for visiting.

What is this? This is a list of the weekly farmers markets within the City of Chicago for 2006.

Why is this here? I saw a listing of Farmers Markets in the Chicago Tribune a few days ago and was frustrated that I couldn't easily figure out which markets were close enough to visit and which were too far away. Since we've been doing a lot of GIS work lately, this was the perfect excuse to finally play with the Google Maps API (and a terribly inefficient way for me to figure out where the nearest farmers markets were).

A few tips:

  • You can add a marker by typing in an address in the field above and clicking on "Lookup Location". Make sure you add "chicago, il" to the string, or it'll search the world, e.g. "1160 e 54th st, chicago, il" to find Inquirium WHQ. The algorithm isn't perfect. It especially had problems with numbered streets and intersections.
  • Click on a name on the right and it'll highlight the corresponding marker.

NOTES/DISCLAIMERS

  • The data was cut and pasted from the City of Chicago site, so there may very well be a few mistakes here and there. The locations are definitely inexact. The locations are based on address searches via the intersections given in the text. I had to reconstruct a few locations because the system couldn't find them automatically, so the locations may not be exact. When in doubt, follow the written instructions.
  • There are also a number of suburban and monthly farmers markets that I haven't bothered to list. Visit the city's site to get that info.
  • If I were going to do this right (and if I had the time), I'd try to decontruct the City of Chicago's web search on Farmer's Markets. If you can do this, let me know.
  • Actually, it might be cool to have pictures of all of these markets. I'm gonna try to hit as many as I can this summer, but if anyone visits and takes pictures, send them to me and I'll figure out how to post them.
